August 22nd, 2009

It's one of those rare Saturday nights when I have the luxury of reading. I'm in the middle of an entrancing book and as usual, I could not help but smile at some paragraphs and yes, highlight. Here are the words that turned orange tonight:

There is a time when every young girl looks thus. Woe to him upon whom she looks!

This first glance of a soul which does not yet know itself is like the dawn in the sky. It is the awakening of something radiant and unknown. Nothing can express the dangerous chasm of this unlooked-for gleam which suddenly suffuses adorable mysteries, and which is made up of all the innocence of the present, and of all the passion of the future. It is a kind of irresolute lovingness which is revealed by chance, and which is waiting. It is a snare which Innocence unconsciously spreads, and in which she catches hearts without intending to, and without knowing it. It is a maiden glancing like a woman.

It is rare that deep reverie is not born of this glance wherever it may fall. All that is pure, and all that is vestal, is concentrated in this celestial and mortal glance, which, more than the most studied ogling of the coquette, has the magic power of suddenly forcing into bloom in the depths of a heart, this flower of the shade full of perfumes and poisons, which is called love.

It's been a while.

It's been a while.

I've been meaning to write. To write about slow [news] days and whirling [news] days but never found the time and the words to. Yes, life has been about the news, both the political and the personal. There's just so much news that I find myself just trying to run. To run after the story, after the people and after myself. I try to just catch my breath and try to make sense of everything most of the time.

Unlike before, there are not much rants and complaints. The drama is still there but the drama queen not quite. I am grateful that I have found some peace in what I do, that purpose and passion have always, always been there. I am glad to know that whatever and whenever news breaks, my resolve remains whole, the resolve that I am doing what I ought to be doing with my life.

There are days when I feel I am not doing enough. There are moments when ambitions and expectations tempt and taunt me. There are times when I feel I am shortchanging myself. There are hours of wondering "what could be" and why "what could be" is not yet "what is." There are minutes of thinking if "what could be" will ever be. But I have learned to wait.

News has taught me urgency, the drive to get things fast and first. Yet, it has also taught me the wonder of possibility. That the unexpected can happen. That routine can be broken. That assumptions can go wrong. That the impossible can be possible. I have learned to wait and to prepare for whatever -- in the truest sense of the word and not the complacent sense. Foresight is a target so when whatever finally happens, I will be present, smack in the center of it.

It's been a while and I am still here.

There are no words that can best speak of the life of the late leader of the Sumilao farmers, Rene Peñas, than his own.

After arriving from a media conference earlier this year, Ma'am Glenda said, "From where I am now, newspapers and TV stations-- profitable for many years --  are closing down. Ad departments are slashing their workforce. Lots of soul searching, lots of uncertainty.  And it's just the beginning."

Here's an article that will help journalists search our souls (I found this thanks to KD and the technology that is both boosting and killing our industry).

(And just one more parenthetical note. I said before that I find it cool that VIPs like Ma'am Glenda get to be called acronyms like GMG. I've changed my mind. Acronyms are impersonal and sound aloof. I'd rather use "Ma'am Glenda!" and "Ayeeeee!!!" with a smile and exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
